Ladies of X

i've been keeping pretty busy lately doing commissions and doing some design work while i recharge for getting back into sequential art. a favorite request i've found is emma frost from the x-men. doesn't hurt she's fun to draw too! this time, the buyer asked for her to be in her costume circa 2004/05, which was a little classier than her frank quitely outfit. haha

the second piece is a warmup sketch i did of psylocke. tried something a little different this time, instead of shading in her hair and costume, i just left it all open.

back to work!

Invisible Girl

here's a recent commission i finished--sue storm/richards (aka the invisible girl) from the fantastic four. the characters of the FF are always fun to draw (though ben grimm can make me want to pull my hair out) and i never realized the multitude of costume variations they've all had. most of the variations are subtle, though. anyway..

Kid Flash

i get lots of requests to draw DC universe characters, and this sketch was one suggested on one of the boards i frequent. kid flash, aka iris west, from the kingdom come storyline. i'm not familiar with the character or the story (i know i know, it's on my to-read list) but she was fun to draw.

and to refute my pal mike, i do not hate the DC universe--i just grew up on marvel comics. i'm always game to draw more of them, though!

New Character Designs

here's some new character designs for a new pitch i'm working on with an up and coming writer, nick spencer. i don't want to spoil his story--but his pitch to me was really good. in essence, the story is 'runaways' meets 'lost.' i'm pretty jazzed about working on this--i always try to vary my subject matter from project to project.

i was initially hesitant to work on a pitch like this after a disastrous experience on another one last year. but, things are clicking early between the two of us, so i think it'll result in a good story. i'll be working on the pitch concurrently to my super hero book

Astounding Wolf-man

i'm halfway through my dynamo 5 story, and i wanted to do a little sketch between pages. since i'm working on an image book, i figured i'd give some of the other characters a try.

so here we have robert kirkman and jason howard's astounding wolfman. i've only read a handful of the comics, but they're fun stuff, worth checking out!

Bamf!

here's a newly completed commission of nightcrawler, my favorite x-man. he's fun to draw, but it's been a long time since i've drawn a full shot of the character. normally i'd put him in his classic costume, but the guy who commissioned it wanted a different look.

Living Super

i did this the very next day after i finished 'We, the People.' my next book is a super hero book of my own creation, and it's been in development for awhile (got to love when life throws you curveballs). anyway, i'll be jumping back into it real soon here, with an eye to a 2010 release. but, i digress..

i remember back in the '80s, marvel did these full page in house ads that had closeups of their characters. in particular, i remember a power man and iron fist one. that stuck with me. so i wanted to emulate that, since this story is my valentine to the comics i grew up on (with a twist..haha).

not sure where these will be used yet, but they'll appear in full color for the final versions. i'll post them as i complete them!

Ramona

did this as a warmup this morning for a commission i'm working on. i figured if i drew scott pilgrim, i needed to draw the object of his affections, ramona flowers! she wears a ton of different outfits in the series (imagine that) but i like the adidas stripe look on the second book's cover. i know my buddies paul and evan are fans of the adidas design as well!

i'm only three volumes into the series, and it's really growing on me. at first, i didn't see what the hype was about, but now i'm really liking what mr o'malley has come up with. the books have a fun aspect to them that i think is missing in a lot of mainstream comics.
