Wolverine

My contribution to the Bendis Board weekly sketch thread--with Wolverine as the theme. link I'm no fan of Wolverine's yellow & blue costume (personally i think it's ridiculous) and i always think wolverine should be short and squatty like john byrne depicted him. anyway, i opted to draw wolvie in his 'mutant lumberjack' look in the wilds of canada.

Buzzin' on Love

it's been a crazy, drama-filled day (long story, but you have to love the holidays) so i needed to unwind. so here's a sketch of maggie and norm, from the newly released book from oni press, 'Love Buzz.'

It's my friend Len Wallace's first published work, and I can't say enough good things about it. It's a 'true love story' but it's by no means sappy or overly sentimental. I was pleasantly surprised by this story (mostly because Len is kind of a pervert when we talk. haha) Anyway, I highly recommend the book!

Now that I feel things are back on track, it's time to draw some comics!

Spider-man

i realized i was nearing 300 deviations on deviantart last week, so i dusted off this spidey drawing i'd started a couple of months ago. it started off with a little goofy gesture drawing of spidey (since he's prone to get in odd positions) and i didn't do much with it for awhile.

but i was looking at google maps recently and discovered it's pretty handy for building design references! so i decided to finish this drawing and make it the 300th piece of mine on deviantart!

okay, off to wrap presents. have a great weekend, all!

X-men

This is some sketching around i did this weekend in manga studio. These are the x-men circa the start of writer mike carey's run, so we have omega sentinel, rogue and sabretooth. carey has been probably one of the best x-men writers in recent memory. x-men legacy is the one x-book i make a point to pick up!

Gesicht

some fan art from Naoki Urasawa's Pluto, which I've talked about in my deviantart journal. This is the main character of the series, Gesicht, a robot police detective. This shot comes from a scene at the end of the first volume. I highly recommend this series!

Stepford Cuckoos

I turned in the final page of chapter 1 of mine and Jay Faerber's Notorious, and I felt like sketching afterwards. I decided on the Stepford Cuckoos, who were introduced in Grant Morrison's New X-men run a few years back. They're sort of clones/daughters of Emma Frost, each with telepathic powers. I wanted to draw them all kind of doing their own pose, because it seems every pic I see of them, the artist has just duplicated a single drawing.

Anyway, back to work!

Stephen Stills & Scott Pilgrim

here we have stephen stills, singer/guitarist and scott pilgrim, bassist of sex bob-omb!

i was inspired to draw up the rest of the sex bob-omb band after the kim pine sketch i did: [link] this will be part of a print i'll have a limited run of at STAPLE! 2010. It'll be fully colored and I'll post the final version here when it's done!

Sheva Alomar

another entry for the bendis boards' sketch thread! the theme this week was 'your favorite video game character of 2009.' [link] well, my favorite game was resident evil 5 (despite the fact that i haven't had much time to play), so i chose to sketch one of the protagonists, Sheva Alomar.

done on my cintiq with manga studio

Curb Your Enthusiasm

sketch of larry david of curb your enthusiasm and seinfeld fame. curb is one of my all time favorite shows!

Fanboy Radio

A quick note to let everyone know that the folks at Fanboy Radio have uploaded the interview I did with them last week! You can listen in here!

New Commissions

a pair of recent commissions. First, DC comics' Zatanna. The buyer ended up wanting a slightly different pose for her, but i liked this version too much to throw away!

and next is an original character from someone, the name being Great White. I believe he will debut in an online comic soon!

Power Girl

a quick, tongue-in-cheek sketch of power girl today. my son got sick on saturday and was kind enough to pass his cold on to me, so i'm wiped out. haha good timing, too! oh well. hope everyone has a happy thanksgiving!

Buffy slays Edward

another piece done for the bendis boards' weekly sketch threads. this one was for buffy the vampire slayer, (link) and in honor of the new twilight movie coming out, i decided to cross them over, as it were. haha

after hearing my wife and her friend and pretty much every other female i know go on about twilight, i decided to have a little fun at the sparkly edward's expense.

Heroes & Villains

first up, a commission of marvel british superheroes, union jack and spitfire. i always liked union jack's costume when i was younger, and spitfire has really become an interesting character in the captain america and captain britain & mi-13 comics.

and secondly, a warmup sketch (finally!) of the villainous evil ex-boyfriends of ramona flowers, matthew patel and lucas lee, from the scott pilgrim series. i can't recommend that series enough!

Reporter Kermit

this was a 30 minute speed drawing i did just now for one of the bendis board's weekly sketch threads (i'm so behind, but the week this was for was your favorite sesame street character: [link]) i always enjoyed the kermit reporter segments on sesame street, and even though i sometimes catch the show with my son these days, i don't think kermit does this segment anymore. ah well.

Batman & Robin

I did this piece as sort of a companion piece to the Joker & Harley Quinn piece I did a ways back.

I don't get to the comic shop as often as I'd like to these days, nor do I read as many singles as I used to, but one series I can't miss is Grant Morrison's Batman & Robin. I based the characters' looks on how they appear in that series, which is loads of fun. I won't spoil the current storyline, but let's just say it's a different sort of Batman in the book.

I've got more Bat-verse pieces in the works, which I'll be posting soon!

Kim Pine & X-23

first up, an x-23 commission. she's wolverine's clone, i believe, and currently a member of x-force. hadn't drawn her before, but she's fun to draw!

and next, after a frustrating day of drawing comics, i needed to blow off some steam and have some fun. it's been awhile since i've done any scott pilgrim art, so i decided to do a shot of scott's first girlfriend/ sex bob-ombdrummer, kim pine. she's known for her shout-out, 'WE ARE SEX-BOB-OMB! ONE TWO THREE FOUR' before rocking out. haha

this one was fun. i'm not ready to quit comics. yet. :-)

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch

in between pages and commissions, i'm trying to work on some new stuff for the upcoming convention season. people seem to dig my venture brothers stuff, so i decided to do another! this time, the sexy and unfortunately vocalized Dr. Mrs. The Monarch/aka Dr. Girlfriend. I'm planning on doing a limited run of prints of this, probably debuting at STAPLE! 2010 in March.

DCU Love

first up is a Green Lantern Kyle Rayner commission I recently finished. Not too familiar with the character outside a couple of Grant Morrison JLA issues, but this was fun to draw!

Next, Supergirl. i drew this piece for fun--i needed a break from standing poses, and i wanted to draw supergirl. haha. i also wanted to stay away from the overly cheesecake versions i see of her so much, and the standard 'flying around' pose she's typically in. DC toned down her look recently, so i wanted to try that look out.

and there's no background because i couldn't think of anything, so there. :-)

Cable & Gambit

Welcome to November! First up is a Cable Commission I recently finished, and after that is a pic of Gambit and some random sketches I did in Manga Studio. I've been using Photoshop to draw comics since 2005 and not had much luck trying out other programs to draw with. But I got a trial version of Manga Studio a ways back and forgot about it. I finally tried it out this weekend and I've got to say--I really like it! Drawing is real easy with the cintiq and it feels more like traditional inking techniques than in photoshop. I've got a ways to go before I add this to my workflow, but I may have to spring for the full version soon.

The Phantom Killer

Happy Halloween!

No, this is not jason vorhees from friday the 13th part 2, but the Phantom Killer from the film 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown.' (the friday the 13th filmmakers totally ripped off this guy's look). It's been many years since i saw the movie, but i remember renting it quite a bit as a teenager. I was fascinated by the pseudo-documentary feel to it and the overall creepy atmosphere. The Phantom Killer was a real life serial killer in the Texarkana area in the '40s. Wiki here.

Dynamo 5

here are the inked pages to my contribution to Dynamo 5 #25, on sale now from Image Comics! I did these pages in between finishing We the People and beginning Morning Glories, and they were just a blast to do. The script was fun and I got good feedback from Jay Faerber and Mahmud Asrar on the pages, and the final product was colored by Paul Little, one of my favorite collaborators.

I also included my thumbnail sketches for the pages. The final splash page came out a lot different to the original thumb.

Expect more from Jay & I in 2010!

Poison Ivy

this is a Poison Ivy piece I'd started earlier this summer that I finally inked up. It's pretty big--like 24x15, and Richard at Zeus Comics was kind enough to offer me a space in his store in which to display/sell it. Inked this with my pentel brush & my faber-castells, but i also used these new prismacolor ink pens i found the other day. they work like microns, but the ink flows out much easier!

if you're interested in buying this, you can go to Zeus, or just drop me a line!

Uncanny X-men

recent commission i finished. the guy wanted Storm, Wolverine & Colossus, and didn't care which costumes/era they were in. So I chose their appearances from the mid-80s, when i started reading the series. I loved Storm's mohawk!

Freddy Krueger

this sketch was for the weekly bendis board sketch thread. the theme being nightmare on elm street!

Morrigan & Moppets

finished this drawing of Morrigan from the Darkstalkers fighting game series this morning. i had a major case of artist's block yesterday and a friend suggested i do some more drawings of fighting game characters. Morrigan always...stood out.. among a lot of characters in that genre.. haha. i'll try and get this colored up soon!

and a bonus piece--the murderous moppets from venture bros. that i sketched while watching some episodes the other day!

Joker & Harley Quinn

did this one just for the fun of it. comics' most insane couple. haha

back to character designs!

Classic Psylocke

Sketched out this drawing of Betsy Braddock, aka Psylocke, in her armored costume from the late '80s today in between doing some designs for a new project. Psylocke is typically portrayed in her 'Asian Ninja' look, but she was white & British when I first started reading X-men. (yeah, X-men continuity can be weird) I actually like the armor costume and wish they'd bring it back! Ah well.

And I changed up my signature too!

Blue Man Group

it's friday!

this was a quick warmup i did today. haha i know it's kind of cheesy to put dr. manhattan from watchmen and tobias funke from arrested development together, but it made me giggle. (and no, neither of these guys are actually in the musical act, the blue man group)

The Monarch

More Venture Bros. art! This was requested on the bendis board, and since the Venture Bros. season premiere is this weekend, i figured, why not? The Monarch is probably one of the most hilarious villains I've ever seen, and his exagerrated features are fun to draw. spent about 90 minutes on this, and I included the original inks here as well.

I've got some more Venture Bros. pieces in the works and will probably have prints of them for the upcoming con season.

DC Commissions

My last update was really Marvel-centric, and now this one is DC-centric. haha. These are a couple of recently completed commissions--Batgirl (the classic version) and Superman & Lois Lane.

Punisher & Cabal Commissions

Two newly completed commissions of Marvel Comics' The Punisher and the villainous Cabal/Dark Illuminati!

Dazzler

took a break from inking commissions to draw this image i had in my head. this is marvel comics' dazzler, aka alison blaire. she's kind of maligned in comic fandom due to the fact that she was created at the height of the disco era. her powers--the ability to convert sound into light energy, didn't exactly wow fanboys.. haha i didn't ever read a comic with her in it until i started reading x-men in the late 80s, hence this very 80s influenced piece.

i always remember the 80s having a lot of neon, bright, oversaturated colors, so i wanted to play around with that. and i wanted to work from colored 'paper' as it were, so i just picked a saturated pink and colored right on top of that.

Star Wars

'...nothing but star wars! if they should bar wars, please let these star wars staaayyyy'

haha please excuse the bill murray tribute there. i just finished this up for the weekly bendis board sketch thread. this week's theme being draw an image from the star wars saga. the thread's here

this is really rough--i spent probably a grand total of about 20 minutes or so on it, but it was fun to do so i thought i'd share.
