Baron Ünderbheit
have i mentioned i'm a huge fan of venture bros. on adult swim? :)
this warmup sketch is of Baron Werner Ünderbheit, one of the many hilarious villains from the show. i love his look and description by the Monarch as a 'dime store Doctor Doom.'
i saw the season four promo the other day ([link]) and the show's been on my brain. haha

Voodoo & Emp
continuing the wildc.a.t.s theme on my sketches with Voodoo & Emp. my buddy shawn requested voodoo, but i didn't want to do a cheesecake shot of her. hence the monster arm. haha
i was looking at my wildcats: street smart trade, which collects the second series issues done by scott lobdell & travis charest. charest is such a badass--i wish he could draw monthly comics! he drew a very sexy voodoo and i loved the stylized look he gave to emp.

Grifter
another quickie for today, as i'm heading out the door to do a signing for we the people at zeus comics in dallas (if you're in town, stop by! :D) here we have grifter, aka cole cash from jim lee's wildc.a.t.s. i had so much fun drawing zealot http://supajoe.deviantart.com/art/Zealot-134594165, that i decided to do another member of the team. and i threw in a quick halftone pattern for shading just for fun.
i might do some more '90s characters for warmups as well.
but probably not anyone from youngblood. haha

Typhoid Mary
today's warmup is typhoid mary, from daredevil's rogue's gallery. after the daredevil warmup the other day ([link]) i've been on a DD kick. i got into daredevil in the late '80s in the ann nocenti/john romita jr. run. i loved those comics, and one of the characters introduced was tyhpoid mary. granted, back then she had a HORRID costume that was wayyyy too 80s (big hair and shoulderpads..haha).
bendis and maleev brought her back a few years ago, and i decided to start with their revision of her for this sketch.
i hear these days she's ended up in the avengers or something. i dunno. i'm always partial to the crazy, hired gun version. :-)

Zealot
quick 30 minute sketch to warmup with today. this is zealot, from jim lee's wildcats--as any comics fan from the 90s will know. i know the 90s are regarded with a lot of disdain, but i was a huge fan of jim lee's back then, and really dug wildcats. (i won't tell you how many copies of the first issue i bought... sigh)

Jill Valentine
i actually started this pic last night, around midnight, and did the grayscaling this morning. so technically it was done today. haha
this was another suggestion from a buddy--jill valentine from the resident evil series. you don't have to twist my arm to do art from resident evil--i love that franchise!
speaking of which, i do believe i'll fire up RE5 for the first time since march tonight..

Con Sketches

The Man Without Fear
warmed up with a drawing of matt murdock--aka daredevil: the man without fear. i've only drawn the guy a few times, but i remember being a big fan of the ann nocenti/john romita jr. run in the late '80s. (nobody draws superheroes like JRJR!) i also dug quesada's version of the character. i admit i haven't kept up with him lately--the last time i read his book was halfway through the bendis/maleev run.
the guy's got such a great rogue's gallery of characters that would make for fun sketch candidates.. :-)

Strung Out Jonny Quest
i'm trying to get re-situated with all my projects after the convention this weekend (which was a blast and very successful!) i'll post a write-up soon!
today's warmup is the adult jonny quest, as depicted on the adult swim show, venture brothers. i love venture bros.--it's one of the few great shows on cartoon network these days. i've only just recently been catching up on the latest season, and seeing the show's depiction of seminal '60s cartoon kid adventurer, jonny quest, as a strung out, paranoid adult never fails to crack me up.

Luke Cage, Hero for Hire
been crazy busy today getting ready for Dallas Comic Con this weekend! nevertheless, i still managed to get a warmup sketch in today. ere we have Luke Cage, AKA Power Man, Hero for Hire. did this as a companion to my iron fist piece from the other day since the two of them were a duo in the '80s (hey, just like hall & oates! haha) and members of the new avengers.
i always liked luke's '70s tiara costume better than his t-shirt and jeans look these days. so much more 'comic book-y.' :-)

The Immortal Iron Fist
back to basics for warmups! i've been reading the essential iron fist trade from marvel, which collects the early appearances of the character from the '70s and '80s. i've never really read his books or been a big fan of the character before, but these are some great, fun comics. so i sketched him up for a warmup today, trying to play with poses.

God of War
this was my warmup for today. it started out as a grayscale sketch, then i thought it might be cool to add the red, and before i knew it, about 90 minutes had gone by and i did this speed painting.
this character, Kratos, is from the sony playstation series 'God of War.' it's a pretty intense game, and heavily influenced the FAKK2 mod i worked on called 'Red Wake.' i've only played part of the first one, but i hear the other games are good too. my strongest memory of playing that first one? the bewbs! haha (oh and the combat was really nice too)

Destro
destro! i did this warmup drawing since today's the release of the live action gi joe movie. and no, i won't be going to see it. haha. i'll just wait for the dvd. since they didn't screen the film for the press, that's a pretty bad sign. i mean, how could they mess it up? anything's got to be a step up from the ridiculous cartoon! :-)
i did like gi joe as a kid, and the villains especially. destro and cobra commander were really cool (despite CC being an idiot a lot of the time--he looked cool!). the cartoon was pretty stupid, but the comics, written by larry hama, were mostly good. (especially near the end, when he started killing characters)

Lone Wolf & Cub
today's warmup drawing is of Lone Wolf & Cub, which is a long-running manga tv and film series from Japan. i must confess to never having read the books or seen the films, but the characters were suggested to me by my friend Coop. i liked the visual of this badass samurai type hauling around a baby. haha from reading the wiki, it sounds like a really cool story! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_wolf_and_cub
i decided to throw some tones down on it to give it some depth. gotta change things up every once in awhile!

Big Trouble in Little China
warmed up today with a quick sketch from one of my all time favorite films--big trouble in little china. haha. yeah, it's a hokey movie and the lead character has a mullet, but nevertheless--it's a fun film! here we have jack burton (kurt russell) and wang chi (dennis dun). i originally had a bigger shot in mind with more of the cast, but remembered it's a warmup and didn't want to get carried away!

The Variants
today's update is a commission i recently finished for the eisner award-winning shop, Zeus Comics, for the new web-based episodic comedy that owner Richard Neal is starting. The show is called The Variants and i highly recommend checking it out!
Anyway, they wanted the shot to resemble the classic Avengers #1 cover, with the cast on the cover replacing the marvel characters. I did the art, and the cover was arranged by Dave Lartigue.
Here are the individual characters:
