The Ghost with the Most

got the idea for today's warmup sketch after i saw tim burton's beetlejuice on tv the other day. i freakin' love that film--i watched it over and over when i was a kid. such a twisted, cool looking movie!

Marvelman

sketched this up for the weekly bendis board sketch thread. this week's theme being Marvelman. if you're a comic fan you're probably familiar with the character and why he's back in the headlines as of last week. (but if you're living under a rock, check here. :-)

Thanos

did this drawing to get back into the swing of things post-sdcc. if you're not familiar, thanos is a villain of the cosmic variety and nemesis to adam warlock and captain marvel over at marvel comics.

i'd just finished rereading the death of captain marvel before i left for the show and he was on my mind. it's a great story and one of the first comics i remember reading as a kid. and he was at the center of one of the big early 90s crossovers, the infinity gauntlet.

i don't know why he has a skrull chin when he's not a skrull (comic nerd!) but hey, it's his look. haha i do plan on coloring this--but it'll have to take a backseat to pages and game art for now!

Luna Lovegood & The Gryffindor Hat

i went to see the new harry potter film, harry potter and the half-blood prince this morning with my wife. such a great film! it had been awhile since i'd read the book, so i was able to be surprised by some of the developments. anyway.. did this sketch of one of the characters in the series, luna lovegood. she was introduced in the previous film and she's quite the oddball. in this one, she wears a gryffindor hat in support of her house's quidditch team and i thought it was a hilarious visual.

and with that, i'm off to bed for my early flight tomorrow. see you people post-san diego comic con!

Green Onions Are All I Need

just recently i've been checking out the manga, Gantz, as per the recommendation of one evan bryce. holy hell i had no idea manga could look that good. i hate to say that up until this point, i've had a bit of a disdain for the genre. no more.

if you haven't read this series, it's about a group of people who have died but are resurrected to hunt down and kill aliens. i've only just read the first volume and it's chock full of gore, nudity and highly detailed art. a very clever blend of traditional and 3d art.

aaanyway, today's warmup sketch is from said manga--a 'green onion alien' from the first volume. :-)

Deadpool

totally stressed trying to get ready for SDCC next week, but i'm still trying to keep up with my sketching.
so, deadpool is the subject of my warmup sketch today. :-) the merc with a mouth seems to be a magnet for controversy lately if you've been following him. and he seems to be insinuating something with his left hand... ;-)

Spectre of Blofeld

i got to talking about the bond villain nature of baron zemo with someone the other day, so i've had the james bond series on the brain. and now, today's warmup sketch is of the leader of SPECTRE, ernst stavro blofeld.

i was going for the donald pleasance depiction (he's been played by numerous actors). he was famously satirized by mike myers in austin powers as dr. evil. :-)

Resident Evil 4

warming up today with a sketch from one of my all time favorite games, Resident Evil 4. a friend requested a sketch of the game's protagonist, leon kennedy a ways back.

like i said, it's a great game, with fantastic gameplay and a creepy story. however, i only got about 3/4 of the way through before i got too busy with work. and then, resident evil 5 came out...haha

Baron Zemo

today's warmup sketch is marvel comics' baron zemo, of the masters of evil and thunderbolts. i'm trying to break away from drawing x-universe characters as warmups, and i remembered how much i enjoyed the early issues of the original thunderbolts comic (check it out--fun stuff!). zemo's almost like a bond villain in the marvel universe.

Goblin Queen

drawing archangel the other day got me to thinking about the 'inferno' crossover of the late '80s in the x-books. i loved that storyline and still love to reread it at least once a year. one of the main villains is the goblin queen, aka madelyne pryor. she had a very...skimpy costume in the story, to say the least! haha i try not to do too many cheesecake drawings, but i'd never drawn the character before, so i figured i'd give it a go as a warmup drawing today.

i know the backgrounds are rough as heck, so whenever i take this to a finished, colored piece, i'll definitely polish those up!

Archangel

did this inbetween pages today. based this on his current look in x-force, which is itself a take on walt simonson's original design.

i always thought archangel was a cooler concept than angel in the x-universe. i mean, a guy whose mutant power is he has wings and can fly? haha as archangel he could at least cut people up! :-)

Captain America

today's warmup drawing--captain america in honor of independence day. happy fourth of july to my fellow americans!

Dead Space

this was today's warmup sketch of isaac clarke from dead space that i took a little futher. it's still a bit rough, but more polished that most of my rough sketches.

if you haven't played dead space for the 360 or ps3--it's a phenomenal third person survival horror game. think resident evil in space. i didn't get too far into it (i think i'm on chapter 3) before i got too busy with work. it's definitely worth checking out, though! you can't kill the necromorphs (outer space zombies) with just headshots alone--you have to dismember them first. haha

Warriors Three

recent commission work. never drawn the characters before, and mythology/swords & sorcery stuff isn't necessarily my bag, but it's fun to get out of the comfort zone when you can! plus i think these guys are great supporting characters for thor. i based their looks on the mike oeming/scott kolins thor mini from a few years ago.

if you're not familiar, clockwise from the left, Hogun the Grim, Volstagg and Fandral.
