Knives Chau

you'd never guess i was a big fan of the scott pilgrim series, would you?

30 minute warmup doodles of one of scott's love interests in the books--right before he meets ramona, actually. she has a 'jilted lover' character arc, but she actually becomes a pretty cool character. plus i love the line that she yells during her fight with ramona. :-)

one of these days i'll do a proper colored up pinup of the knives vs. ramona fight.

James Bond 007

Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming's James Bond commission piece. Based him on his Quantum of Solace look, but threw in the Casino Royale card stuff for the background. I'm a huge Casino Royale fan--both the book and the Craig film, but Quantum? What the heck was that? haha

Superhawke

got a request from a guy on deviantart to do a character from his friend's group of characters. and since i had some time before flatting and coloring a cover (yay flatting) i had some time to knock this out. plus the guy has been a real cool cat on DA and i appreciate the faves! this one's for you, man!

quickie 30 min sketch today. more dc comics/batman universe fun! decided to delete my lineart layer on her and play around with a sin city style look.

The Creeper

been on a ditko kick lately, so today's warmup is one of his creations for dc comics, the creeper. i confess i've not read much of his appearances, but i always thought he looked cool.

Cassidy

If you've read Garth Ennis' & Steve Dillon's magnificent series, 'Preacher,' then you'll probably recognize this guy. It's Cassidy, the Irish vampire, heavy drinker and best friend to the main character, Jesse Custer.

I read the entire run of this book a few years back and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. Being an Ennis story, it's got a lot of swearing and horrific violence, but it's really just a great series. I normally don't care for vampires, but Cassidy is just plain cool. haha

Real quick job on this--probably about 90 minutes with the colors. I did the sketch normally, but felt it needed some color. A little blood is always a nice touch. :-)

Envy

this is envy adams from the third book in the scott pilgrim series. she's scott's ex-girlfriend and lead singer of clash at demonhead.

trying to change things up a little--after drawing a bunch of angry lookin' dudes, and to explore something slightly in the manga/anime territory. plus, i love the scott pilgrim series, and had fun drawing characters from the book before. (i really can't recommend this series enough)

i'm also trying to work up my coloring speed, since i'm coloring my long-in-development superhero book in addition to drawing and writing it.

Chew

my warmup sketch is of tony chu and agent mason savoy of the FDA from the image series, 'Chew.' i'd heard a lot of good buzz about the series, and finally checked it out the other day--it's well deserved! it's a very out-there idea with fantastic art from rob guillory. basically, chu is cibopathic--meaning he gets psychic impressions from the foods eats. you can find out more at the comic's official site: http://chewcomic.blogspot.com/

and i'll be back soon with more art!

Sealab Love Triangle

i couldn't resist doing another piece of sealab 2021 art after the bizarro captain murphy pic i did the other day. while murphy's my favorite character on the show, stormy, debbie and quinn are all next on my faves list. stormy and quinn's interactions always crack me up (esp. in the the happycake episode) and you have to love debbie's nymphomaniac ways. haha

(L-R: stormy, debbie, quinn)

(and i realize quinn didn't smoke in the show, but the pose just seemed to necessitate a pipe. )

Warblade

one more wildc.a.t.--warblade! based on his look in the lobdell/charest run.

this is the last of my wildc.a.t.s sketches for now. i might tackle the villains at some point, though! (helspont would be a blast to draw)

My Name is Dr. Henry Killinger..

...and this is my magic murder bag.

more venture brothers fun. this was something i worked on over the labor day holiday.

Bizarro!

'bout to head out the door, but here's a quick sketch to kick off the day. since i've done some venture brothers-themed drawings lately, i thought i'd do some art based on my favorite adult swim show, sealab 2021. i can watch that show without ever getting tired of it. one of my favorite episodes is 'bizarro' where the crew are held hostage by evil 'bizarro' versions of themselves from another dimension. so this is bizarro captain murphy, the group's leader.

'bizarro....bizarro....bizarro!'

Magneto

wow, 50 posts!

here's a quick grayscale sketch of Magneto done this morning! he's probably the most well-known and definitely one of my favorite of the x-men's villains. however, he's such a great character with such interesting flaws it's hard to imagine him as a cookie cutter bad guy. i am a big fan of the original new mutants run, and his turn as headmaster of the school was a great development in his character.

Spartan

Michael Lark (Daredevil, Gotham Central) has been giving me good feedback on my Wildcats warmups, so here's another one--original team leader, Spartan. (aka Hadrian, aka Jake Marlowe, et. al) When I first saw the preview art for WildC.A.T.s back in the day, I though Spartan was going to be the boring one. haha. But, he had a very cool character arc throughout the series and from its various writers.

Anyway, back to work!

The Pro

quick 10 minute warmup sketch today. this is the Pro--if you're not familiar, she's well, a super-powered prostitute. haha. she's the subject of a graphic novel from garth ennis and amanda conner from about 7 years ago. it's raunchy and hilarious--and one of my favorite works of ennis'. he has such a disdain for superheroes, it's hilarious to see him just let loose and lampoon not so subtle imitations of iconic characters.

i think the book was reprinted not too long ago. if you're not offended easily, i highly recommend it.
